Hong Kong throws out 70,000 tons of computer and electrical products every year, which puts a burden on landfills. Moreover, waste computer products will release harmful substances, which are harmful to the human body and the environment. Therefore, when replacing computers and electrical appliances, the electrical appliances should be recycled and recycled as much as possible.

Producer Responsibility Plan for Waste Electrical and Electronic Products

From August 1, 2018, the Producer Responsibility Scheme on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WPRS) implemented, when consumers purchase regulated electrical appliances and want to discard old electrical appliances of the same category, the seller must endorsement of the old service plan, at the request of consumers, arrange for the removal of an old appliance of the same category from the premises designated by the consumer free of charge. The regulated electrical appliances (REE), namely air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, computers are recycled under the scheme. The collection points of REE included participating estates and industrial and commercial buildings.

The regulated electrical appliances include the types of electrical appliances commonly, namely air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, computers (including desktop computers, laptop computers and tablet computers), printers, scanners and monitors.

Computer and Communication Product Recycling Program

This agency plans to provide the old computers, monitors, printing, scanners, computer accessories and communications products recycling services. Collection points include:

• Participating estates and industrial and commercial buildings (see participating estates/buildings )

• 14 public collection points (EPD support platform hotline: 5575 4068)

 

In addition, the recycling program will provide free collection services for major computer products of 5 pieces (up to 10 pieces in remote islands and remote areas) or more, including computers, printers, and monitors. For collection service arrangements, please call the hotline 8108 9889.
